history

Allegany State Park's history began with a New York State Legislature enacted on May 2, 1921, when the state decided to purchase two pieces of land in the Quaker Run Valley . The Act approved $ 25,000 for the land purchase, subject to the condition that the same amount be raised from private funds first. The first 7,020 acre (28.4 km²) land was purchased by the heirs of Amasa Stone on June 18, 1921 for $ 31,500 . The next acquisition included 150 acre (0.61 km²) and buildings around the Stone Estate . This property was already $ 4,300. The park was formally opened on July 30, 1921.

Senator Albert T. Fancher was commissioned by the Governor of New York , Nathan Lewis Miller , with a team to plan and organize the large park, which is still growing in size to this day. Fancher became the "Father of Allegany State Park". There are seven "Fancher Cottages" named after him.

In the beginning, a former school house served as an administration building and tents from the equipment of the First World War on wooden platforms served as the first accommodation options before the first wooden huts were built in 1925.

The first State Park Bond Issue was passed in 1924. This approved funding that enabled construction work in the Redhouse Area , including the construction of the Redhouse Administration Building and Redhouse Dam , creating Redhouse Lake .

Science Lake

Science Lake was created in 1926 and the first official bathing area in the park was created. The Allegany School Of Natural History was built on the lake with 42 cabins and a main building with a library, laboratories and a meeting room. Between 1933 and 1942, many construction works were carried out in the park by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Roads, bridges, campsites, hiking trails, picnic areas and a ski area were built. In addition, reforestation, water regulation and animal welfare measures were carried out.

Quaker Lake was built later , winter-proof huts and full service cottages and other infrastructure facilities were built.

By the 1960s, the park had grown so large that it encompassed almost all of the Red House and Elko parishes , as well as a large area of the Carrollton parish . The construction of the Kinzua Dam and the Southern Tier Expressway were attempts to make both Elko and Red House disappear. The state was successful at Elko, which was dissolved in 1965, but many of the residents of Red House, including the family of football player Marvin Hubbard , fought the eviction. To date, there is a small exclave in the northwest of Allegany State Park with 14 houses in which 38 people live. The state reserves the right of first refusal if the houses are to be vacated.

The Bova Ski Area had to be closed in 1980.

Buildings & facilities

There are a number of buildings and facilities and ruins in the park that reflect part of its history. The Old Quaker Dance Hall was one of the most popular dance halls until the mid-20th century. It was demolished in 2002 due to poor conservation.

The Redhouse Dance Pavilion was located on Redhouse Lake . It originated from an old barn and was used as a dance hall , especially in the rock 'n' roll era . It was last used in 1973 and demolished in 1984. The Redhouse Miniature Golf Course was later built on the foundation. Today only the lighting equipment is left.

New Ireland

The settlement of New Ireland ( Carrollton ) was built near Limestone at the beginning of the 20th century . The village was attached to Limestone and today only a few ruins can be seen on Limestone Run Road .

Park Fire Towers

To reduce the risk of forest fires, three fire lookout towers were built in the park. The Summit Fire Tower was the first in 1926. It is 66 ft (20 m) high. The other two towers were the Mt. Tuscarora Fire Tower and the Mt. Irvine Fire Tower . When air surveillance was introduced in 1971, fire towers became obsolete. The Mt. Irvine Fire Tower was dismantled and rebuilt at the entrance near Bradford , Pennsylvania .

Gas lease

There is also a large storage facility for natural gas on France Brook Road . Originally it was a natural gas deposit. The Limestone Storage Pool is now operated by the National Fuel Gas Supply Corporation . The natural gas from 20 natural gas deposits is stored and regulated in the large underground sandstone "pool". The reservoir is connected to the "K line" pipeline which runs from Buffalo to Eldred, Pennsylvania . In 2010, a master plan was drawn up banning oil and gas extraction in the park.

Administration building

The administration building in Red House is in Tudor style and was built during the Great Depression. The building has been modernized, but still retains its original charm. It houses the Red House Rental Offices , NYS Park Police Station , the Natural History Museum, Red House Gift Shop , Red House Restaurant, and the Allegany Regional Offices for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation .

It also houses a large lounge with a view over Red House Lake . This room is available for events.
