Amir Hassanpour

Amir Hassanpour ( August 10, 1943 in Mahabad , Iran - June 24, 2017 in Toronto ; Persian امین حسن‌پور, Kurdish ئه‌میر حه‌سه‌نپوور) was a Kurdish cultural scientist. He obtained his bachelor's degree in English from the University of Tehran in 1964 . He himself taught at schools in Mahabad from 1965 to 1966.

In 1968 he began studying linguistics in Tehran and received his master's degree in 1970. In 1972 he finished his doctoral thesis. He later went to the University of Illinois in the USA and studied communication . In 1989 he received his Ph.D. in the subjects of Sociolinguistics and Contemporary History of the Middle East . His doctoral thesis dealt with the standardization of the Kurdish language from 1918 to 1985 ("The language factor in national development: The standardization of the Kurdish language, 1918–1985").

Since 1986 he lived in Canada , where he taught at various universities. Most recently, he was a lecturer in the Faculty of Civilizations of the Near and Middle East at the University of Toronto . His focus was on the influences of the media, conflict and democracy on nationalism, ethnic conflicts, genocide and social movements.

Amir Hassanpour was married to Shahrzad Mojab , director of the Women and Gender Studies Institute at the University of Toronto.
