Amphidamas (Chalkis)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amphidamas ( Greek Ἀμφιδάμας ; † around 700 BC) was a Chalcidian nobleman who fell in the Lelantine War . Hesiod traveled to the funeral games held in his honor to take part in the poets' contest, as Hesiod himself narrated:

ἔνθα δ 'ἐγὼν ἐπ' ἅεθλα δαίφρονος Ἀμφιδάμαντος Χαλκίδα τ 'εἴς ἐπέρησα · τὰ δὲ προπλλὰφραδμένα ροενας προπεφραδμένα ποελλὰς ποενα ποπεφραδμπνα ποενας ποενε ·ποελλὰσραδθες πεθενα ποελλὰσραδθες πεθενα πεσνε προπεφραδμένα
"I drove over there once to the brave Amphidama's game in Chalkis, there were prizes announced in abundance, donated by his generous boys."

In later tradition there was a report of a "duel" between Hesiod and Homer in that poetic contest. However, the historicity of this "duel" is controversial. However, archaeological Euboean parallels can be demonstrated for the hero cult ; so between 720 and 690 BC. In Eretria numerous graves of warriors were laid in a heroon.

Amphidamas is occasionally referred to as "King (of Chalkis)", but this only goes back to the completely unhistorical designation βασιλεὺς Εὐβοίας basileus Euboías "King Euboas " in the Vita Hesiodi and is therefore wrong. In addition, the kingship in Chalkis was abolished before the first colony was founded (i.e. before 750 BC ). Amphidamas is only referred to by Plutarch as ἀνὴρ πολεμικός anēr polemikós "warlike man".
