Clark's anemonefish ( Amphiprion clarkii ) is the most widespread of all anemonefish. It lives in the coral reefs of Southeast Asia , from the coast of northern Australia to southern Japan , from Melanesia to the northern waters of the Indian Ocean , in the Persian and Arabian Gulf . Its wide distribution comes from its planktonic larval phase, which is long for anemonefish , in which the larvae are widely displaced by the ocean currents.

features

Clark's anemonefish reaches a maximum length of 14 to 15 centimeters. The basic color is black, parts of the head, underside and fins are yellowish or orange. On the sides of the body there are three white transverse stripes, the first behind the eyes, the second below the transition from the hard-rayed section to the soft-rayed part of the dorsal fin and the last on the caudal peduncle. The caudal fin is white or yellow. Young fish and adults from Vanuatu or New Caledonia can also be almost completely yellow-orange in color and only show the front two white horizontal stripes. Specimens that live together in symbiosis with Mertens anemone ( Stichodactyla mertensii ) can be completely black with the exception of the light horizontal stripes and the caudal fin. The dorsal fin is supported by 10 hard and 15 to 16 soft rays, the anal fin has 2 hard and 13 to 14 soft rays.

As an ecological generalist, Clark's anemonefish accepts all ten symbiotic anemones as partners. It has been observed that Clark's anemonefish inhabits the symbiotic anemones together with the orange anemonefish ( Amphiprion sandaracinos ).
