Amr Fahmy
Amr Mustapha Mourad Fahmy ( Arabic عمرو فهمي, DMG ʿAmr Fahmī ; August 28, 1983 - February 23, 2020 ) was an Egyptian football official who held the post of Secretary General of the African Football Federation (CAF) from 2017 to 2019 .
Life
Amr Fahmy was born in Cairo to Mustapha Fahmy, who was Secretary General of the African Football Association from 1982 to 2010 before becoming Head of Competitions at FIFA . Fahmy's grandfather, Mourad, was a founding member of the African Football Association and served there as general secretary from 1961 to 1982. Before taking up his post at CAF, Amr Fahmy studied FIFA Master's in Management, Law, and Humanities of Sports in Switzerland.
He worked for the French Lagardère Sports and Entertainment as head of operations in Africa. Before that, Fahmy worked in the Competitions department of the CAF from 2007 to 2015 and was, among other things, head of the Africa Cup 2015 in Equatorial Guinea .
In March 2019, Fahmy was dismissed from the CAF after accusing President Ahmad Ahmad of corruption (see section CAF whistleblower ). On December 3, 2019, Fahmy announced that he would run for the 2021 CAF presidential election.
Fahmy was known as the founder of Ultras Ahlawy, the largest fan group of the Egyptian football club Al Ahly SC . He died on February 23, 2020 at the age of 36 due to cancer. After his death, members of the Ultras Ahlawy displayed flags and banners in the CAF Champions League game against Sundowns. The fans of Red Star Belgrade and SC Freiburg , with whom he had a special relationship, also paid their respects to Amr Fahmy on banners.
CAF whistleblower
In March 2019, Fahmy sent documents to the FIFA Ethics Committee accusing CAF President Ahmad Ahmad of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars , bribery and sexual harassment of CAF employees. The documents showed that Ahmad Ahmad ordered him to pay bribes of $ 20,000 each to the presidents of the African football associations. In the documents, he also accused Ahmad Ahmad of embezzling another $ 830,000 by ordering equipment from a French intermediate company called Tactical Steel at overpriced prices. On June 7, 2019, Ahmad Ahmad was arrested by the French authorities and questioned in connection with investigations into the CAF's contract with Tactical Steel. He was released a day later.
