Vittorio Luigi Alfieri (born July 3, 1863 in Perugia , † November 8, 1918 in Musestre di Roncade ) was an Italian lieutenant general and politician who was Minister of War under Prime Minister Orlando between 1917 and 1918 .

Life

Vittorio Luigi Alfieri, son of Evaristo Alfieri and Chiara Bruni, embarked on a military career and completed an officer training. After graduation, he became a second lieutenant in the infantry in the royal army on July 7, 1881 . He was promoted to lieutenant on July 19, 1883 and to captain on October 11, 1888 , and in 1889 he was seconded to the General Staff . There he was promoted to major on March 3, 1898, and almost three weeks later, on March 20, 1898, he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Crown of Italy . On July 19, 1900 he was appointed full professor at the War School, where he taught logistics until 1905 . There he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 18, 1903 . After his further promotion to colonel on May 21, 1908, he worked in the War Ministry and shortly thereafter, on June 4, 1908, he also received the Knight's Cross of the Knight's Cross of the Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus awarded. In addition, on June 3, 1909, he received the Officer's Cross and on December 26, 1909, the dignity of Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy. After finishing his employment in the War Ministry, he was posted to Benadir on September 18, 1911 , where he was commander of the colonial troops in Italian Somaliland until December 1, 1913 .

After his return to Italy, Alfieri was briefly commander of the Brescia brigade and on January 18, 1914, received the dignity of commander of the Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to major general on February 1, 1914 . He then acted as General Director of the War Ministry between March 29, 1914 and April 1, 1915 and, two months after the Italian entry into World War I , took over the post of General Director of the Army on July 24, 1915 ( Italian Intendente generale dell'esercito ). In this function he was promoted to lieutenant general on March 30, 1916 . In the further course of the war he took on various positions within the government and served in the Salandra II cabinet (April 7 to June 18, 1916) and in the Boselli cabinet (June 18, 1916 to June 17, 1917) as Undersecretary of State in the War Ministry. On June 28, 1916, he was also named Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy and on December 29 , 1916, he was also named Grand Officer of the Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus appointed. In the Boselli cabinet he was also Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Armaments and Munitions from June 17 to December 13, 1917 and, at the same time, Undersecretary of State for Food Supply and Consumption in the Interior Ministry from October 10 to 29, 1917.

On October 29, 1917, a few days after the devastating Italian defeat in the Battle of Good Freit , Lieutenant General Vittorio Luigi Alfieri took over the post of Minister of War in the Orlando cabinet , which he held until his replacement by Vittorio Italico Zupelli on March 20, 1918. On December 20, 1917, the Law on the Administration of Military Housing and the Law on the Maintenance or Reinstatement of the Military in the Event of War were passed. On December 31, 1917, he was appointed Senator of the Kingdom . After his ministerial office, he again took on duties in the army. In the battle of Vittorio Veneto he commanded the XXVI. Corps on the lower reaches of the Piave . He died a few days after the end of the war on November 8, 1918 of the consequences of the Spanish flu . Alfieri was married to Beatrice Biella.
