The Amstelhotel (also Amstel Hotel , official name InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam ) is one of the most famous hotels in the Netherlands . The building, which was built from 1866 to 1867 as the first AmsterdamGrand Hôtel ”, is located southeast of the canal belt at Professor Tulpplein 1, directly on the banks of the Amstel . The building has been a listed building as a Rijksmonument since 1974 .

The Amsterdam doctor and philanthropist Samuel Sarphati (1813–1866) financed and organized the construction of numerous facilities and buildings that contributed to positive urban development in the mid-19th century. In 1863, Sarphati presented the plans for the Amstel Hotel , which the renowned architect Cornelis Outshoorn had designed on his behalf.

As a typical representative of eclecticism , Outshoorn used different styles. The gable shows mainly classical elements, while the interior is in the style of the Renaissance . The original plans provided for four wings of the building with a main wing on a projected boulevard (today Sarphatistraat ). Due to problems with the financing and the death of the client in the meantime, only one wing of the building was ultimately built. In 1867 the prestige building was opened.

In 1885 the hotel was equipped with an elevator , and in 1892 it was connected to the power grid. Between 1899 and 1900 the hotel was given an additional floor according to plans by the architect Dirk Margadant. The wide cornice above the third floor still indicates the building's former height. From 1917 there was running water in the hotel. In 1953 part of the terrace on the Amstel was glazed. Today's winter garden was built during a two-year renovation in 1992.

The Amstelhotel belonged to the InterContinental Hotels Group for many years , which sold the hotel to the US bank Morgan Stanley in 2006. In 2011 the Lebanese businessman Toufic Aboukhater became the owner of the hotel. The management remains in the hands of the InterContinental Hotels Group.

The hotel's most famous guests included Queen Elizabeth II , Henry Kissinger , Audrey Hepburn , Steven Spielberg , Rihanna , The Rolling Stones , U2 and Robbie Williams . The Amstelhotel is now a five-star hotel with 55 rooms and 24 suites . It has a swimming pool, a gym, a bar , a brasserie as well as a Michelin star excellent restaurant La Rive .
