Office building

The Amtshaus is a listed building in Muri in the canton of Aargau . It is located in the district Wey, between the Muri monastery in the north and the parish church of St. Goar in the south.

history

In 1659, Abbot Aegid von Waldkirch proposed the construction of an inn for pilgrims and travelers. Michael Wickart from Zug directed the construction of the building ; it is the only surviving building by this sculptor. In 1660 the “Red Lion” inn was opened, named after the Habsburgs' original heraldic animal . After the canton of Aargau was founded in 1803, the district court's proceedings took place here . In 1827 the restaurant had to be closed by order of the canton to make room for the archive, prison and the country hunter's apartment. On January 10, 1841, a tumult broke out when an angry crowd overwhelmed and captured government councilor Franz Waller , who wanted to arrest members of the conservative "Bünzer Committee". This incident sparked an armed uprising in Freiamt , which the government troops quickly put down and served as a pretext to overturn all of the Aargau monasteries.

With the abolition of the Muri monastery, the building came into the possession of the canton, which also housed the district office in it. From 1852 the building was owned by the municipality of Muri. The small police station had to be relocated in 1967 due to lack of space. As part of an exchange of land and buildings approved by the Grand Council , the administrative building returned to the canton in 1991. In 2000, the district authorities moved to the renovated south wing of the monastery while the district prison was closed. The rebuilding and renovation of the office building followed by 2003. Since then it has housed a cantonal police station .

building

The office building stands on the eastern edge of the Kirchbühl hill, parallel to the slope. The three-story building has five by three axes above the vaulted cellar. Two additional gable floors are located under the bent gable roof with crooked hips . The building is structured by square corner pilasters and S-shaped volutes of leaves under the chamfered window walls.
