Parish Church of St. Goar

The parish church of St. Goar is the Roman Catholic parish church of Muri in the canton of Aargau . It is located in the district of Wey on the Kirchbühlhügel, around 250 meters south of the Muri monastery . The parish church dates back to the 10th century, but had to give way to the monastery church and was rebuilt at the current location. The oldest components are the foundation of the church tower (approx. 1335) and the early baroque choir (1640/46).

history

The early history of the parish church is closely linked to that of the monastery. The Acta Murensia reports of an own church owned by free farmers . Before the turn of the millennium, they placed themselves under the protection of the Habsburg Lanzelin , who later drove out the owners and replaced them with self-employed people. Lancelin's son Radbot put down an attack by the displaced's heirs. A feud with his younger brother Rudolf led to the looting of Muri around 1025. Radbot married Ita of Lorraine and gave her the possessions in Muri as a morning gift. Ita learned that they had been illegally acquired and set up a monastery to atone for the guilt that had been imposed on them.

In 1027 the monastery was founded. The parish church was then demolished, replaced by the new monastery church and rebuilt at the current location. This measure served to secure the legal succession to the parish for the abbey, as it was attached to the property. For decades, the abbey and its guardians fought over possession of the church set and the property rights associated with it in the area. Finally, in 1242, the Habsburgs finally renounced ownership rights. The parish was under the abbot, who appointed a vicar with his own benefice . Until the abolition of the monastery in 1841, the area of the parish included not only Muri but also today's communities of Aristau , Buttwil and Geltwil and Wallenschwil in the Beinwil community . The parish maintained branch chapels in Aristau, Buttwil and Wallenschwil.

In 1531 troops from Bern damaged the church, whereupon it was re-consecrated on October 6, 1532. In 1583/1584 the church tower was rebuilt, two years later the choir .

In 1637 the parish decided to completely rebuild the nave and the choir. Work began in 1640 and was completed six years later. In 1677 a choir altar that was no longer needed in the monastery church was set up, as was the case in 1744. The current high altar was made in 1837/1838, and at the same time the church received new pictures for the side altars.

Since the church had become too small, the nave was demolished in 1935/1936 and rebuilt in a widened form, including the older parts of the building. A comprehensive renovation took place in 1987/1988.
