Vegetative characteristics

The Leinblättrige Gauchheil is a short-lived, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches a size of 10 to 50, rarely up to 70 centimeters. The stem is lignified at the base and is erect, ascending or prostrate, but does not take root at the nodes. The leaves are opposite, arranged in threes in whorls or, less often, alternate. The simple leaf blade is linear-lanceolate, lanceolate or elliptical.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are hermaphroditic. The blue or, more rarely, brick-red or white corolla is wheel-shaped with a diameter of 15 to 25 millimeters. The petals are smooth or slightly notched at the edge, with glandular hairs made up of four cells of equal size.

The flowering period extends from March to July in the natural habitat and from May to September in garden culture.

Wild plants are diploid with a chromosome number of 2n = 20. In culture there are also large-flowered varieties with a tetraploid chromosome set of 2n = 4x = 40.

Occurrence

Anagallis monelli occurs in the western Mediterranean region (from Portugal to southern Italy and from Morocco to Tripolitania ) in dry, open places, fields and roadsides, fallow land and sandy coasts.

Systematics

The first publication of Anagallis monelli was made in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus in Species Plantarum . An important synonym for Anagallis monelli L. is Anagallis linifolia L.

The subspecies Anagallis monelli subsp. maritima (Mariz) M.Laínz (densely leafy plants of the coast) and Anagallis monelli subsp. linifolia (L.) Maire (especially narrow-leaved plants) are not clearly differentiated from typical plants and can be viewed as local variants.

use

The linseed Gauchheil is rarely used as an ornamental plant for summer flower beds. It has been in culture at least since the beginning of the 17th century .
