Anaplasma platys is a bacterium that istransmittedby ticks andcauses canine cyclic thrombocytopenia , a disease of the blood platelets ( platelets )in dogs. The gram-negative bacterium is obligate intracellularly. After infection, characteristic inclusions in the platelets can be seen under the microscope, which are knownas morulae because of their similarity to mulberries . A cultural cultivation has not yet succeeded.
The pathogen was first detected in Florida in 1978 , but occurs worldwide. In Europe it occurs only in the southernmost areas. The most likely vector is the brown dog tick , in which A. platys DNA can often be detected. An experimental infection with this tick has not yet been successful.
