Alphaproteobacteria (also α-Proteobacteria) refers to a class in the phylogenetic system of bacteria that was established on the basis of the base sequence of ribosomal 16S ribonucleic acid ( 16S rRNA ). They belong to the phylum of the Proteobacteria ,

and numerous isolates that have not yet been classified with certainty.
Important representatives can be found in the genera Rhodospirillum , Acetobacter , Rickettsia , Paracoccus , Zymomonas , Rhizobium , Bartonella , Brucella and Nitrobacter . Numerous aquatic species occur among the alphaproteobacteria. High proportions of these bacteria in water samples often indicate oligotrophic conditions.

The Rickettsiales are understood as a taxon that includes the Anaplasmataceae , Ricketsiaceae and Midichloriaceae . If the proto-mitochondria are also included, then the Rickettsiales appear in the above cladogram as a sister group of the Pelagibacterales (would be the branch below this); perhaps the latter also represent a basal subgroup of the Rickettsiales. For details on the Caulobacteridae see Parvularcula bermudensis . Other taxa of Alphaproteobacteria not listed here are (if not specifically noted, according to the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN) and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) as well as the 16S rRNA-based phylogeny according to Release 106 of the project "The All -Species Living Tree ") among others:
- Sneathiellales with Sneathiella chinensis , S. chungangensis , S. glossodoripedis (basal in Rickettsiales or to the Caulobacteridae (Ferla et al. 2013))
- Parvularculales with Parvularcula bermudensis (near Rhodobacterales / Rhizobiales, Caulobacteridae)
- Iodidimonadales with Iodidimonas muriae to the Caulobacteridae (Ferla et al. 2013)
- Kiloniellales with Kiloniella laminarae to the Caulobacteridae (Ferla et al. 2013)
- Kordiimonadales with Kordiimonas gwangyangensis to the Caulobacteridae (Ferla et al. 2013)
