Ehrlichia is a genus of Gram- negative bacteria between 0.2 and up to 2 µm in size. They belong to the order of the Rickettsiales , with whose other representatives they share the obligate intracellular parasitic way of life. Their name was given to them in memory of the German microbiologist Paul Ehrlich .
Ehrlichia are known to cause animal diseases such as Ehrlichia in dogs ( Ehrlichia canis or Ehrlichia ewingii ), but they can also affect humans. The bacteria transmitted by ticks parasitize in monocytes or granulocytes . While such infections are usually barely noticed by those affected, in rare cases they can also cause very serious illnesses that manifest themselves clinically, such as Rocky Mountains spotted fever .
Systematics
The order Rickettsiales and thus also the genus Ehrlichia has seen some changes in recent years. The entire genus Ehrlichia was separated from the family Rickettsiaceae and added to Anaplasmataceae . Cowdria ruminatium was placed in this genus and is now a basionym for Ehrlichia ruminantium . Ehrlichia phagocytophila and Ehrlichia equi were summarized in the species Anaplasma phagocytophilum . Ehrlichia risticii was placed in the genus Neorickettsia and is therefore now a basionym for Neorickettsia risticii . Rickettsia sennetsu was assigned to Neorickettsia sennetsu (sometimes also listed as Ehrlichia sennetsu ).
