The Rhizobiales form an order within the Alphaproteobacteria . It is a phenotypically and metabolically diverse group of bacteria whose assignment is based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analyzes .
In some families, nodule bacteria can be found, bacteria that are able to fix nitrogen and enter into a symbiosis with plants. These are mainly species of the genera Rhizobium and Bradyrhizobium . The Methylocystaceae family includes methanotrophic species that use methane as the only carbon source as an energy source and to build up the cell substance. Species of the genus Bartonella are dangerous pathogens, they can cause so-called Bartonellosis , this includes z. B. the trench fever caused by Bartonella quintana (also called five-day fever). The genus Bartonella previously belonged to the family Rickettsiaceae of the order Rickettsiales , based on analyzes of the 16S rRNA it was transferred to the order Rhizobiales.
Other important representatives are Azorhizobium , Nitrobacter , Brucella , Beijerinckia and Agrobacterium .
