Anastasios II kept his name Artemios on his coins. This solidus bears the inscription ARTEMIUS ANASTASIUS .

Anastasios II Artemios ( Middle Greek Ἀναστάσιος Βʹ Ἀρτέμιος , Latin Anastasius secundus Artemius ; † June 1, 719 in Constantinople ) was Byzantine emperor from 713 to 715/16.

Life

Anastasios was a high imperial official before his coronation on June 4, 713. His real name was Artemios, which he added to his emperor's name. He, like his successor Theodosius III. , was able to stabilize the empire, but was not in control of its decisions, but ruled with the support of various parts of the army .

In May 715 the army called Theodosius III. to the new emperor. Anastasios fled to Nikaia , but only relinquished the throne some time later (late 715 or early 716) and retired to a monastery in Thessaly . In 719 he returned to public life and tried to win over the reigning Emperor Leo III. to fall. But he was handed over by the Bulgarians who supported him to Leo, who had him executed.
