Ancylus Wall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ancyluswall is an elevation on the Swedish Baltic island of Öland .

At a distance of a few kilometers, the wall runs parallel to the coastline on the east side of the island. The Ancyluswall is an old beach wall of the Ancylussee , a forerunner of today's Baltic Sea.

Since the surface of Öland has a sloping incline from west to east, the wall forms a natural barrier for the water on the island flowing east towards the Baltic Sea. Several wetlands, such as the Norra mossen and the Triberga-Alby-mosse , were created on the west side of the wall . As part of drainage work, the wall was broken through in several places in order to allow the water to run off and to drain bogs such as the Skedemosse .

Since the Ancyluswall was dry contrary to its immediate surroundings, it was already a traffic route in prehistoric times. Even today, the eastern coastal road of Öland runs along large parts of the wall. Various settlements such as Triberga , Lerkaka , Långlöt , Gärdslösa and Störlinge emerged here . The well-known rows of mills from Lerkaka and from Störlinge are also located on the wall .
