The prayer mounds ( English prayer mounds , khoekhoe Heitsi-eibeb ) are places of worship , located in the Auas Mountains near the Namibian capital Windhoek .

The place of worship consists of two piles of stones known as the prayer hill . Here stones from the San were piled on top of each other and served as a resting point for travelers. Everyone had to give the site a gift in the form of another stone, twig or grass in order to gain happiness and security on the further journey. These piles of stones could also be found at many borders.

In contrast to the San, the Herero called this place "Ombindi", which means something like walking around . Nevertheless, they still see this place as a special place and touch these places of worship on their travels.

The Damara, however, saw this site rather as a tomb.

The places of worship have been registered as a National Monument of Namibia since September 1st, 1995 .
