Anders Chydenius ([ ˈandərs kʰʏˈdeːniɵs ]; * February 26th July / March 9th  1729 greg. In Sotkamo ; † February 1, 1803 in Kaarlela (now part of Kokkola )) was a Finnish pastor , politician , economist and important philosopher of the classical liberalism , which spread the ideas of the Enlightenment .

Life

Chydenius studied at the Turku Academy and obtained his master's degree in 1754. From 1753 to 1770 he worked as a chaplain in Nedervetil (today part of Kronoby , Österbotten ), then until his death as the main pastor (kyrkoherde) at the church of Kaarlela . In 1765 Chydenius obtained foreign trade rights for several coastal towns in Finland, which made him very important for the town of Kokkola in particular. There the Chydenius Park was named after him, in which there is also a bust of him.

As a member of the parish of the Swedish Diet in 1765/66, he successfully campaigned for the introduction of the law on freedom of the press ( Tryckfrihetsförordning ) , which stopped censorship and introduced information transparency (Swedish: offentlighetsprincipen ) in Swedish administrations. At the Reichstag of 1779 he pushed through a resolution in favor of religious freedom , which King Gustav III. served as the basis for his law on religious freedom for foreign beliefs in 1781.

Chydenius is depicted on the Finnish 1,000-mark banknotes that were issued from 1986 until the introduction of euro cash in 2002.

In 2003 Finland issued a 10 euro commemorative coin in memory of Anders Chydenius.
