André-Charles de La Jaille

André-Charles, marquis de La Jaille (or Lajaille) (born December 7, 1749 in Brest , France , † 1815 in Cork , Ireland ) was a French naval officer, explorer and cartographer.

biography

In the navy, La Jaille held the rank of lieutenant at sea ( Enseigne ) from 1773 and was promoted to captainleutnant ( Lieutenant de Vaisseau ) in 1778 . In 1782 he was involved in the American Revolutionary War in the attacks by La Pérouse on the British posts in Hudson Bay .

After his return to France, he set sail in January 1784 as captain of the Baïonnaise and made two exploratory trips to Senegal by 1785 . With Sylvain Meinrad de Golbéry he explored the coast from Cap Blanc to Sierra Leone and took possession of the Île de Gorée for the French government .

La Jaille was husband of Marie-Vincente de Kerguiziau de Kervasdoué (* 1755 - † 28 May 1802 in London) and lived on Roual, a country estate in Lannilis . Since 1786 he held the rank of sea captain ( Capitaine de Vaisseau ). As a result of the Revolution , he emigrated to England in 1793, before joining the royalist resistance ( Chouannerie ) as a volunteer and taking part in the Battle of Quiberon .

After the defeat of the royalists, he entered the service of Spain as captain in 1797 and served in Saint-Domingue . He was a trader in Havana and from 1798 to 1799 planter in Honduras . La Jaille died on a layover in Cork , Ireland .
