André Bradford

André Jorge Dionísio Bradford , André Bradford for short (born November 30, 1970 in Ponta Delgada , São Miguel island ; † July 18, 2019 ibid) was a Portuguese politician ( PS ). Bradford was a member of the Azores regional parliament between 2004 and 2019, and was part of the regional government under Carlos César from 2008 to 2012 . In the 2019 European elections , he received a mandate in the 9th European Parliament through the list of socialists.

Life

André Bradford was born on November 30, 1970 in Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azorean island of São Miguel, the son of an American and a Portuguese woman. After completing his school career, he studied communication science at the Catholic University , then political science and law. After completing his studies, he then worked as a journalist for the newspapers Açoriano Oriental (from 1992) and Diário de Notícias (from 1997), among others .

In 2000 Bradford began working in the Azores regional administration, initially as a press officer for the Environment Secretariat. In 2001 he moved to the office of the President of the Azores Regional Government, where he was initially an advisor for external cooperation and later for general political affairs.

In 2004 Bradford ran for the first time for the Partido Socialista for the regional parliament of the Azores . He successfully ran for re-election in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 elections. From 2008–2012 he was a member of the 10th regional government headed by Carlos César. He later took over the chairmanship of the PS group in the Azores parliament.

In 2018, the socialist party voted Bradford on the Portugal-wide country list for the 2019 European elections . In total, the socialists won nine seats in the 9th European Parliament , including André Bradford. Due to the losses of the Portuguese Social Democrats, he was the only representative of the Azores in the European Parliament. In Parliament he was part of the S&D group, for which he was a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the Fisheries Committee . He was also a deputy member of the regional development committee .

Shortly after his election to the European Parliament, Bradford suffered a cardiac arrest on July 8, 2019 . After he was put into an artificial coma , he passed away on July 18, 2019. Isabel Estrada Carvalhais , a professor at the University of Minho and 10th on the PS electoral list, took up his seat in parliament .

Bradford was divorced and had two children.
