Life

André Danican entered the King's “Grande Ecurie” on October 12, 1659 as a Cromorne and Trumscheitplayer . He succeeded his uncle Michel II in this position . From 1667 to 1677 he was an oboist for the Musketeers . As such, he followed the king on his campaigns to conquer Flanders and the Spanish Netherlands , where he took part in the siege of Maastricht, as well as in Alsace and Lorraine. During this time he mainly composed military marches .

In the course of time he served as an oboist, flutist, bassoonist and violinist (Dessus de violon) in the “Chambre et Grande Écurie du Roy”. In 1682 he received the coveted title of "Ordinaire de la Musique du Roy".

In 1702 he was given responsibility for the king's music library, and at the same time he was given the royal privilege to publish his compositions. To this day, Danican's extensive, careful compilation forms the basis of the Music Library of Versailles and the music collection of the National Library. This extensive collection contains court operas, ballets, instrumental music and church music from the entire 17th century, partly as autograph and partly as handwritten copies of Danicans. During his lifetime it already comprised more than 10,000 handwritten volumes that had not yet been printed, including almost all of Lully's works and Delalande's vocal music .

His son François-André Danican Philidor became known as a composer and chess player.
