André Victor Édouard Devambez (born May 26, 1867 in Paris , † March 18, 1944 ibid) was a French painter and illustrator.

André Devambez was the son of the engraver, printer and publisher Édouard Devambez (1844–1922), founder of the Maison Devambez in Paris. He worked with his father at an early age and learned the art of etching. He studied at the École des beaux-arts de Paris with Benjamin Constant and at the Académie Julian with Gabriel Guay and Jules Lefebvre . In 1890 he won the Prix ​​de Rome in painting. During his stay in the Villa Medici from 1891 to 1894, he became friends with the painter Adolphe Déchenaud .

Back in Paris, Devambez did the illustrations for the magazines Le Rire and L'Illustration and also illustrated novels and children's books.

In 1899 he became a member of the Société des Artistes Français . In 1911 he received the Order of Knight of the Legion of Honor .

André Devambez was 47 years old when the First World War broke out . He came to the theater of war in Picardy in December 1914 for the magazine L'Illustration . In 1915 he published an album with twelve etchings in a limited edition of 150 copies with scenes from the First World War. He joined a camouflage division as a volunteer. Initiated by the French army, these units used large numbers of artists and craftsmen to camouflage soldiers, weapons and equipment. André Devambez was seriously wounded by several shrapnel in June 1915. He was treated at the Hôpital de la Salpêtrière in Paris for almost a year and did not recover for a long time.

From 1929 to 1937 he was a professor at the École des beaux-arts de Paris. In 1934 the French Ministry of Aviation, founded in 1928, appointed him an official painter. In 1937 he was elected a member of the Académie des beaux-arts .

His son was the classical archaeologist Pierre Devambez (1902–1980).
