André Fuhrmann

André Fuhrmann (born October 30, 1958 in Essen ) is a German philosopher and logician at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

Fuhrmann studied at the Philipps University of Marburg and at the University of St Andrews , where he graduated in 1984 with a Master of Philosophy (MPhil). After further studies at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the Australian National University , he received his doctorate there in 1988 with a thesis on relevance and modal logic .

From 1989 to 2002 Fuhrmann worked at the University of Konstanz , first as a university assistant at Jürgen Mittelstraß's chair , then as a university lecturer , and most recently as a Heisenberg fellow. In 1995 he completed his habilitation in Konstanz with the thesis "An Essay on Contraction". During his time in Constance, there were also guest stays and professorships at Indiana University Bloomington , Columbia University in New York and at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro . Fuhrmann received the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize in 1993 together with Hans Rott for his work in the field of cognitive science . In 2002, Fuhrmann accepted a chair in philosophy in São Paulo , where he taught until 2006. In 2007, he was offered the chair for theoretical philosophy with a focus on logic (successor to Wilhelm K. Essler) at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt . Fuhrmann has also been a co-opted professor of linguistics since 2009.

Fuhrmann's work clearly belongs to the tradition of analytical philosophy . In addition to contributions to logic , especially modal and conditional logic , he has written numerous works on metaphysics , epistemology , philosophy of mind and philosophical semantics . He is best known for his research on belief revision or theory change, an important branch of formal epistemology with applications in artificial intelligence and cognitive science . In the field of botany, Fuhrmann is also interested in freshwater diatoms . Mostly in collaboration with H. Lange-Bertalot, he discovered and described numerous new species.
