André Gardies

André Gardies (born April 28, 1939 in Nîmes ) is a French writer. He has published numerous works on film studies and five novels.

Life

André Gardies spent his childhood and youth in Nîmes . Between 1956 and 1960 he attended the École Normale d'Instituteurs in his hometown and studied at the University of Montpellier . He then taught literature at the Lycée de filles near Niort and at the Lycée de la Source in Orléans .

With the implementation of a short film, "Onomotapa", in 1967 he turned from literature to film. Several other short films followed. The meeting with Alain Robbe-Grillet in 1970 marked the beginning of a period of almost 30 years of critical and theoretical reflection on film. In 1982 he published the first book dedicated to Robbe-Grillets cinema.

Between 1977 and 1985 he taught French and film studies at the University of Abidjan in Ivory Coast . After returning to France in 1985, he was appointed "Maître de conférences en études cinématographiques" at the University of Strasbourg .

After his “Thèse d'état” (a French equivalent of the post- doctoral thesis ), he became a professor of film studies at the University of Lumière-Lyon in 1990 .

On the occasion of the centenary of the invention of the cinema, Gardies participated both as a screenwriter and as a scientific expert in the creation of a CD-Rom about the Lumière brothers , "Le cinéma des Lumière" (co-produced by the CAPA agency), for which he won the 1996 Prix Roberval received.

Since 2000 he has devoted himself entirely to literary writing. He currently lives in Bernis , a small village near Nîmes. At the same time, he repeatedly goes abroad: In Quebec, Germany, Italy, Portugal, England, Burkina Faso and other countries.

Among other things, a literary project in collaboration with the German students at the Julius Maximilians University Language Center took him to Würzburg on July 6, 2011 , where he gave a public reading in the botanical garden.

Gardies is a member of the Société des Gens de Lettres and co-administrator of the “Association Autour des Ateurs en Languedoc-Roussillon”.

Film studies works

As a film professor, André Gardies has published several textbooks on film theory, including Le récit filmique (1993), L'espace au cinéma (1993) and Décrire à l'écran (1999). He specializes in the films of the novelist Alain Robbe-Grillet, about whom he has written three books: Alain Robbe-Grillet (1972), Approche du récit filmique (1980) and Le Cinéma de Robbe-Grillet (1983). Another focus of his studies was on African cinema, on which he wrote works such as Regards sur le cinéma négro-africain (1987, avec Pierre Haffner) and Cinéma d'Afrique noire francophone (1989), as well as a publication related to the One of the fundamentals of the French high school diploma exams in film studies is: Yeelen . In collaboration with other film scholars, André Gardies has published Cinéma de la modernité: films, théories (1981) Le suspens au cinéma (1994) and Le spectaculaire (1996).
