The University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny ( French Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny, formerly Université de Cocody-Abidjan , abbreviation UCA ) is a university in the Cocody section of Abidjan ( Ivory Coast ).

It is one of the elite universities in the region and across the country. With over 50,000 students, the UCA contains 13 faculties and a research center, and offers two-year bachelor's degrees to professional academic, legal, medical and specialist degrees . From 1964 to 1996 it was the main campus of Abidjan University before becoming an independent institution. The University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny is run by the state and is responsible to the Ministry of Education.

Establishment

It was founded on January 9, 1964. In 2008 there were 53,700 registrations. The UCA emerged from two French-founded institutions in 1958. The Ecole des Lettres d'Abidjan (ELA) founded in October 1958, under the joint administration of the University of Dakar and the Ivorian Education Directorate (" Direction de l'enseignement de Côte d'Ivoire ") ). At the same time the " Center d'enseignement supérieur d'Abidjan" (Abidjan Center for Higher Education) was established. On January 9, 1964, the government of the Ivory Coast merged the institutes and promoted them to the rank of university. The entire public university system was known as the University of Abidjan , with the University of Abidjan-Cocody as the largest of the three sites , until the reorganization in 1996. In the reorganization of August 1996, each of these three main campuses became independent universities, directly accountable to the Ivorian Ministry of Education These three were the Université d'Abobo-Adjamé , the Université de Boukaé and the Université de Cocody, at which time the three faculties were renamed the " Units de formation et de recherche " (UFR). The university consisted of thirteen UFRs and a “Center.” The number of special research centers and facilities has expanded since then In 2008 there were two autonomous research centers in the fields of social sciences and mathematics, as well as ten "institutes for advanced studies".

Faculties

In 1971 the School of Letters (formerly the ELA) became the " Faculté des Lettres, Arts et Sciences Humaines " (FLASH). In 1977 the Department of History was upgraded and instead of restricting itself to offering only undergraduate courses ("Premier cycle"), it also began awarding "Deuxième cycle" and "Troisième cycle" diplomas ( Master's degrees and PhD ).
