André Nelis (born October 29, 1935 in Antwerp ; † December 9, 2012 there ) was a Belgian sailor .
successes
André Nelis took part in the Olympic Games three times in the boat class Finn-Dinghy . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he finished the regatta in second place behind Paul Elvstrøm and in front of John Marvin and thus won the silver medal. Four years later he again reached the podium in Rome as third, on which he stood together with the renewed Olympic champion Paul Elvstrøm and Alexander Tschutschelow . In 1956 and 1960 he was the flag bearer of the Belgian delegation at the opening ceremonies. In 1964 he was tenth in Tokyo . At world championships Nelis succeeded in 1956 in Burnham-on-Crouch and 1961 in Travemünde each the title win. From 1958 to 1960 he was runner-up three times in a row and came third in 1957 and 1962. In 1957 he became European champion.
