André de la Varre
André de la Varre (born September 14, 1904 in Washington, DC ; † December 19, 1987 in Vienna ) was one of the leading travel filmmakers who began filming with a camera he had bought himself at the age of 17 after the end of the First World War .
Life
Until 1924, la Varre worked with Burton Holmes . In the 1930s he produced the short film series Screen Traveler in Sumatra , Java , Bali , the Philippines , France , the Mediterranean region, the Netherlands , Austria , Egypt and Palestine . During one of his trips he met his future wife Ilse in Austria. They married in 1933 and have now toured the world together.
André de la Varre's longstanding collaboration with Warner Brothers began in early 1943 with the films Snow Sports in Lake Placid and Tropical Sportland in Florida; at that time he only worked in Technicolor . As a narrator, he worked with the radio speakers Art Gilmore and Marvin Miller . In 1949 he filmed the Palio di Siena , one of the toughest horse races in the world, in his short film Grandad of Races , for which he received an Oscar in 1951 in the “Best Short Film” category.
Other notable film adaptations were the shorts That's Bully, about the running of the bulls in Pamplona (filmed in 1948 and released in 1950), Emperor's Horses (about the Lipizzaners in 1951), Carnival in Rio (1953) and Who's Who In The Zoo (1954). From 1954, la Varre began filming for Warner in Cinemascope . In Germany he shot the short film Time Stood Still about the city of Dinkelsbühl , which was nominated for an Oscar in 1957. Shortly before his death in 1958, there was a renewed collaboration with Burton Holmes.
Despite financial problems and a shrinking travelogue market, la Varre shot the 90-minute film These States in 1975 for the Bicentennial Council .
In 1976 de la Varre fell in love with the Reisenbachhof in Reisenberg . It was here that the idea for the television series Neues von Yesterday was born. André de la Varre, who lived in Vienna from 1956, also died there. He was buried on January 7, 1988 in the Hietzinger Friedhof .
