action
The Palio horse race takes place in Siena, Italy, in July and August . The different horses compete against each other in the name of a contrade on a prepared oval racetrack in the Piazza del Campo . After the preliminary race, the actual event begins: Horses and riders are blessed in the church of the respective district and the festive historical procession to the piazza begins. The contrades present themselves in historical costumes. A central aspect of the event is the appearance of the flag bearers, who present the flags of the contrade in their own choreographies. This is followed by the presentation of the flag that the victorious contrade will receive. Finally the race begins, in which the horses are generally ridden without a saddle. Due to the uneven racetrack and the narrow bends, there will be falls this time as in previous years. In addition, a dog gets lost on the racetrack and has to be rescued. In the end, several horses reach the goal without their rider, but the winner is frenetically celebrated by his contrade and the thousands of spectators.
