The Andrea C. was a passenger ship of the Italian Costa Crociere , which was put into service in 1942 as a cargo ship under the name Ocean Virtue and converted in 1946 for passenger operations. The ship, which has also been used for cruises since 1959, remained in service until 1981 and was scrapped in La Spezia in 1982 .
history
The Ocean Virtue was built under hull number 26 at Todd-California Shipbuilding Corporation in Richmond and delivered to the British Ministry of War Transport on June 27, 1942. In October 1942, the ship went to the London- based Prince Line .
After a year in service, the Ocean Virtue was hit by a torpedo and sunk on July 21, 1943. It was salvaged on September 30, but did not return to service for the Prince Line, but instead was laid up in Catania in April 1944 , where it spent the remainder of the war.
In 1946 the newly founded Italian shipping company Costa Crociere bought the Ocean Virtue and had it converted into a passenger ship in Genoa . The hitherto 134.57 meter long ship was lengthened to 142.27 meters by the conversion, the tonnage increased from 7,174 to 8,604 GT . In April 1948 the ship was renamed Andrea C. and in June 1948 it was put into service from Genoa to Brazil .
In 1959 the Andrea C. was converted into a cruise ship. In addition, their steam engine was replaced by a more modern diesel engine . On July 27, 1959, the ship, now stationed in the Mediterranean , completed its first cruise.
After more than twenty years in service as a cruise ship, the now 39-year-old Andrea C. was retired and launched on October 10, 1981. On December 15, 1982, the ship arrived at the Santa Maria Yard in La Spezia, where it was scrapped.
