Andrea Vasella

Andrea Thaddäus Vasella (born April 29, 1943 in Friborg , Switzerland ) is a Swiss chemist . From 1993 to 2008 he was Professor of Organic Chemistry at the ETH Zurich . Occasionally (as of February 2017) he still gives lectures in organic chemistry at the ETH Zurich.

Life

Andrea Vasella studied chemistry and biology at the University of Freiburg and graduated in 1966 with a licentiate (lic. Rer. Nat.). He then completed an industrial internship at Hoffmann-La Roche in Basel. In 1971 he obtained his doctorate from the ETH Zurich. He studied with Jack Baldwin at King's College London and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and with Robert B. Woodward at Harvard University .

In 1974 he returned to the ETH. In 1977 he became Assistant Professor at the University of Freiburg and Associate Professor at the University of Zurich . There he was appointed full professor in 1988 . From 1987 to 1989 he headed the Organic Chemistry Institute of the University of Zurich (OCI). From 1993 to 2008 he was professor for organic chemistry at the ETH Zurich. However, his enthusiasm for chemistry has not waned in retirement, which is why he can still be found as a lecturer at ETH Zurich after 2008.

His father was the historian Oskar Vasella , his younger brother is the former Novartis boss Daniel Vasella .
