Andreas D. Fröhlich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas D. Fröhlich (born November 30, 1946 in Mannheim ) is a German professor for general special education. His areas of expertise are pedagogy for the most severe disabilities and the integration of nursing and pedagogy.

Live and act

Fröhlich studied education, philosophy and special education. After completing his studies, he worked for many years with severely and severely disabled children and young people. During this time he and his team developed the concept of basal stimulation . In 1986 he received his doctorate in curative educational psychology in Cologne. He then held a substitute professorship for the physically handicapped education in Mainz. In 1989 he was appointed to the chair of mentally handicapped education in Heidelberg. Afterwards Fröhlich held the chair for general special education at the institute for special education at the University of Koblenz-Landau (Campus Landau) from 1994 to 2007 .

Through his practical and theoretical work he was able to show that the assumption of a "lower limit of learning ability" in people with severe cognitive impairments is scientifically not tenable. The "suspension of compulsory schooling", which has been practiced in almost all federal states so far, no longer corresponds to the state of science. Little by little, the educational rights of these children and young people were recognized and legally implemented.

In collaboration with Christel Bienstein , he transferred these insights to unconscious patients, people in coma and vegetative state, as well as confused and demented elderly people. As long as a person lives - so the assumption - he is at least capable of minimal adaptation, he can learn, change and develop. This means that educational activities are meaningful in a broader sense; purely nursing care does not meet the needs and possibilities of these people. The concept of basal stimulation he developed has meanwhile become a regular part of nursing training in Germany; in many European countries, elderly and sick care is taught and practiced according to its principles.

Support diagnostics for severely disabled children have been available since 1984, which he developed together with Ursula Haupt . This diagnostic instrument is used in supplemented and expanded editions to this day.

As a university lecturer, he imparted basic and special pedagogical-diagnostic and pedagogical-therapeutic skills to his students.

Fröhlich initiated the establishment of the International Basal Stimulation Association , as well as the Stiftung Leben pur . He was a founding member of various European NGOs. For many years he was chairman of the scientific advisory board for the Federal Association for the Physically and Multiple Disabled People .

Many of his publications have been translated into different languages.

honors and awards

Fröhlich was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and the Golden Badge of Honor of the German Professional Association for Nursing. The Federal Association for the Physically and Multiple Disabled People was the first to award him the Golden Badge of Honor, and the Elisabeth University in Bratislava awarded him the gold medal for special services to nursing science. He is an honorary member of the International Association for Basal Stimulation. In Krautheim , a school was named for the disabled after him. In 2007 he received the State Medal of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate for special social merits . In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Witten / Herdecke . In 2019 the school for sick people in Unna-Königsborn chose the name Andreas Fröhlich School.
