Andreas Gutzwiller

Andreas Gutzwiller (born September 12, 1845 in Therwil ; † September 14, 1917 ) was a Swiss geologist and teacher at the upper secondary school in Basel .

biography

Gutzwiller studied natural sciences in Zurich and geology in Paris. He was first a teacher in St. Gallen and from 1876 in Basel at the upper secondary school (trade school).

Gutzwiller was one of the pioneers in researching the geology of the Swiss Jura in the area around Basel. In particular, he carried out a detailed stratigraphic study of the Tertiary and Quaternary ( Pleistocene ) in the Basel area.

Sheet 4 ( St. Gallen , Frauenfeld ) of the geological map of Switzerland from 1879 comes from him as well as from Ferdinand Schalch and Julius Schill. A part of the geological map of Basel from 1915 comes from him and his friend Eduard Greppin .
