Andreas Jung (French André Jung ; born June 20, 1793 in Strasbourg , Alsace , French Republic ; † October 12, 1863 ) was a Protestant church historian and librarian in Strasbourg.

Life

His family had lived in Strasbourg since at least the 16th century, and his father was a member of the boatmen's guild. Andreas Jung attended the city's Protestant grammar school and studied theology and history at the local academy since 1809. In 1816, he attended lectures in history and church history in Göttingen .

From 1817 Jung lived again in Strasbourg. In 1821 he was appointed teacher at the St. Wilhelm University College there. In 1826 he also became an assistant professor at the Protestant seminary and librarian adjunct at the city library and the library of the seminary. In 1830 Andreas Jung was appointed full professor at the Protestant Seminary, where he mainly taught church history. In 1843 he took over the management of the two libraries after the death of Johann Ludwig Alexander Herrenschneider . Jung was very committed to recording and cataloging the valuable holdings of the libraries, which, however, were almost completely burned during the German siege in 1870.

There is a tomb for Jung in the St. Thomas Church in the city, and the Rue André Jung is named after him.
