Johann Ludwig Alexander Herrenschneider

Johann Ludwig Alexander Herrenschneider (born March 23, 1760 in Gaugrehweiler , † January 29, 1843 in Strasbourg ) was a German meteorologist and mathematician .

Life

He grew up in the Palatinate town of Gaugrehweiler, where his father, Johannes Herrenschneider , was court preacher at the court of Carl Magnus von Rheingrafenstein . His uncle Johann Samuel Herrenschneider († 1804) was a professor of mathematics at the University of Strasbourg .

After his then ten-year-old sister was killed in an attack on her father in 1773, the family moved to Rappoltsweiler and in 1777 to Strasbourg. Herrenschneider began his studies at the local university, where he studied mathematics and astronomy with Johann Jeremias Brackenhofer († 1789), among others . On September 26, 1782 he received his doctorate in philosophy with a treatise " on consciousness ". Subsequently, for the sake of his father, he studied law and obtained a licentiate in law in 1785 . His passion, however, lay in the natural sciences and mathematics. After the death of his uncle, he took over his math lectures on a temporary basis. In 1789 he received a call to the chair of astronomy. He became the successor to Brackenhofer, who had died shortly before.

He began his professorship with a trip through Europe, during which he visited the most modern observatories of his time. On his trip he met Wilhelm Herschel , Nevil Maskelyne , Jean Cassini , Jérôme Lalande , Jean Sylvain Bailly and Pierre-Simon Laplace , among others . When he returned to Strasbourg in January 1791, the faculty had been dissolved due to the French Revolution . Until it was re-established, he taught physics, chemistry and mathematics at various schools in Strasbourg.

In May 1794 he and his father were arrested along with Isaak Haffner and Johann Lorenz Blessig as opponents of the Jacobins and imprisoned until the 9th Thermidor .
