Isaak Haffner

Isaak Haffner (born December 2, 1751 in Strasbourg ; † May 27, 1831 there ; also Isaac ) was an Alsatian theologian and university professor .

Life

Haffner studied theology at the universities in Strasbourg , Göttingen , Leipzig and Paris . He then settled in Strasbourg, became vicar, then pastor at the French Nikolaikirche and, for a time, Ephorus at the St. Wilhelm University College . He continued to work on his academic career and was awarded a Dr. phil. , two years later in 1784 as Dr. theol. doctorate and appointed private lecturer in 1788 .

During the revolutionary period , in 1793, Haffner was imprisoned in Strasbourg with his friend theologian Johann Lorenz Blessig . After his release he established in 1795 the Protestant community there again and was 1814 spiritual inspector at the St. Thomas Church , 1816 then a member of the Board of the Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine . Haffner was also vice-president of the local Bible Society founded by his friend Blessig - with whom he published various writings, including a successful hymn book.

In 1803 Haffner was appointed professor at the Protestant Academy , and after its complete re-establishment as the theological faculty, he became its dean in 1819 . Haffner had a library with around 30,000 volumes.

In 1821 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor.
