The St. Nikolauskirche or Niklauskirche (in historical documents: Kirch St. Nikolaus, zu St. Niclase, St. Niclausbrücke, St. Nikolausstaden, Clausstaden, Alsatian Sankt Klaus , French Église Saint-Nicolas ) is a small Gothic church in Strasbourg . The church building belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine and is Monument historique under the number PA00135152.

John Calvin preached at this church for the first time on September 8, 1538 and then held services for the small French-speaking congregation ( Huguenots who fled France ). Albert Schweitzer served as vicar for a while . Here he gave his significant “Strasbourg Sermons” from 1898 to 1913 and again from 1918 to 1921. From December 1, 1899 he was teaching vicar here, and from November 14, 1900 he was ordained vicar. The sermons were received by my friend Annie Fischer, widow of the Strasbourg professor of surgery and sister of Hugo Stinnes . On April 11, 1908, as vicar, he carried out the wedding of Theodor Heuss, who later became President of the Federal Republic of Germany, with Elly Heuss-Knapp .

history

The church was built from 1387 to 1454 on the site of a previous building from 1182, which was originally dedicated to Mary Magdalene . The tower with its pointed helmet was put on in 1585. In the 17th century the interior was redesigned. In 1905, Émile Salomon , the architect of Temple Neuf , added the east facade and the sacristy.

Furnishing

Remains of frescoes from the 15th century can be seen in the modest interior. Interior walls and vaulted ceilings are currently in poor condition and urgently need restoration.

organ

The organ of the brothers Gottfried and Andreas Silbermann from 1707 was dismantled in 1967 and irrevocably dismantled in the following years. The instrument, which enjoyed an excellent reputation at the beginning of the 20th century despite several renovations and conversions, had not survived the numerous modifications since the end of the First World War .

A small box organ from the mid-19th century has served as an instrument for church services since 1972.
