Andreas Kilingaridis ( Greek Ανδρέας Κιλιγκαρίδης , born August 5, 1976 in Saratow , Soviet Union ; † June 12, 2013 in Bydgoszcz , Poland ) was a Greek canoeist who competed since the early 2000s. He started for Navtikos Athlitikos Omilos Kalamarias Thessalonikis (Ναυτικός Αθλητικός Όμιλος Καλαμαριάς Θεσσαλονίκης).

Life

Kilingaridis was born in Saratov, Soviet Union, in 1976. His parents were Pontic Greeks who now live in Alexandroupoli . He started canoeing at the age of eleven and emigrated to Greece at the age of 17. In 1997 he was 4th at the Mediterranean Championships , in 1999 he came 5th at the Canoe World Championships . In 2000 he qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and came 13th in a single kayak (500 m), but was disqualified in the 1000 m race. In 2001 he was first in the Balkan competitions . He received a scholarship from the International Olympic Committee , but fell back to last place in the 2004 Olympic Games . In 2006 at the European Championships on the Teplá in the Czech Republic , he came in 7th place. In Duisburg , at the 2007 Canoe Racing World Championships , he finished 4th, 5th and 7th. At the 2007 European Cup over 10 km he was first and won bronze in the marathon over 10 km in Milan . He qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and came in 5th. In 2013 he was preparing for the World Cup in Bydgoszcz, Poland, when he was found lifeless in his hotel room on June 5th. Acute leukemia was diagnosed. He was pronounced clinically dead on June 11 and died on June 12, 2013.
