Andreas Lackner (carver)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas Lackner (* before 1490; † 1545 in Hallein ) was an Austrian carver from the Danube School who was demonstrably active in Hallein in 1518.

Life

The only archival evidence of Lackner is a short note in the so-called Lichtpfennigbuch von Abtenau, which an anonymous scribe wrote on the last page of the manuscript around 1600. It only indicates his authorship on the altar as well as his origin from Hallein and shows the former inscription.

The stylistic similarities to the works of the Landshut master Hans Leinberger - especially in comparison to his characteristic style of clothing - suggest a training course or a collaboration in Leinberger's workshop.

In the Abtenau reliefs one recognizes Lackner's engagement with Albrecht Altdorfer's graphics . In the case of Lackner's reliefs, only details, but not overall compositions, were adopted. The cape with fringed border in Pentecostal relief, for example, borrows from the Byzantine Madonna type, which was particularly widespread in southern Germany in the 16th century.

The distinction between several hands on a work of art, such as the altar of the Abtenau parish church , results from the common procedure within workshop collectives at the time. Therefore, in art historical research, a wide variety of works of varying quality are ascribed to Lackner and his workshop:

  • St. Blaise enthroned, 1518, formerly high altar parish church Abtenau, today Belvedere , Vienna, inv. 4888/1
  • St. Ruprecht, formerly high altar parish church Abtenau, today Belvedere, Vienna, inv. 4888/2
  • H. Maximilian, formerly high altar parish church Abtenau, today Belvedere, Vienna, inv. No. 4888/3
  • St. Bendikt, relief, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv. KK 9984
  • Andreas Lackner workshop, finding the cross, relief, Nonnberg Abbey, Salzburg
  • Andreas Lackner workshop, the wedding of the Catherine, shrine relief of an altar, 1522, Nonnberg Abbey, Salzburg
