Andreas Metaxas ( Greek : Ανδρέας Μεταξάς) (* 1786 or 1790 in Kefalonia ; † September 19, 1860 in Athens ) was a Greek politician and Prime Minister .

During the second half of the independence struggle from 1824 to 1827 , he accompanied Ioannis Kapodistrias to Greece, who later appointed him Minister of War. After the assassination of his patron Kapodistrias, he was a member of the Provisional Government from 1831 to February 6, 1833, of which he was chairman from August 18, 1832.

After King Otto I ascended to the throne on February 6, 1833, he was appointed privy councilor and envoy in Madrid and Lisbon . After his return to Greece in 1840 he was again Minister of War and in the following years rose to one of the leaders of the conservative Russian Party (Ρωσικό Κóμμα).

After the coup d'état of September 3, 1843 , he was appointed (first constitutional) Prime Minister of Greece on September 15, 1843 as successor to the king . He held this office until March 11, 1844. In 1847 he was finance minister in the cabinet of Ioannis Kolettis for some time . Later he was ambassador to Constantinople from 1850 to 1854 .
