career

At the age of ten, Schmidt joined the children's team at Dynamo Dresden and went through all the youth teams of the police sports community. In 1976 he was part of the squad of the GDR junior national team and played a junior international match on October 10, 1976. In the GDR's 1-0 home win, he was used as a left defender. From 1977 to 1979 Schmidt was part of the young league team of Dynamo Dresden and was nominated as a defender there as well. Even before he was registered for the first Dynamos team in 1979, he played his first games in the GDR league in the 1978/79 season. He made his debut in the elite league on August 26, 1978. In the second match between FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and Dynamo Dresden (0-2), he played in midfield. In total, he played six league games this season. On February 27, 1979 he was left defender in the youth international game GDR - Bulgaria (2-0). It was the last selection game of his career. In the 1980/81 season he made his breakthrough to become a regular player, when he was used as a left defender in 20 of the 26 point games played due to the long-term failure of defender Christian Helm . After Helm's return, Schmidt fell back into the role of substitute player in 1981/82. After Schmidt was only used six times in the league in 1982/83, including three times only as a substitute, he was only reported for the second team in the third-rate district league for the 1983/84 season . Nevertheless, he was still used in nine league games this season. 1984/85 he returned to the squad of the league team, but was only called up in six point games. At the end of this season, Schmidt, now 26, was finally delegated to Dynamo Dresden. From 1978 to 1985 he played only 70 of the 182 point games played by Dynamo Dresden in those years. Of the 28 European Cup matches that took place during this period , Schmidt was only involved in eight matches.

At the beginning of the 1985/86 season, Schmidt joined the league rivals and district rivals Stahl Riesa. After a bumpy start with frequent short appearances and failures, he managed to gain a foothold in the second half of the season as a sweeper in the Riesa team. In 1986/87 he was Standard Libero with 25 stakes. In his last season in the league in 1987/88 he played in the first eight league games in midfield, after which he was only used in four other league games. Schmidt played his last league game on March 26, 1988 when they met on the 18th matchday between Stahl Riesa and Union Berlin (1: 2). With another 59 league games for Riesa, he increased his account in the GDR top division to 129 missions. He scored two championship goals each for Dresden and Riesa.

After his retirement from high-performance sport, Schmidt became a recreational footballer in the summer of 1988 with the district league team BSG Progress in Neustadt , Saxony , where his former Dresden teammate Matthias Müller played. From the summer of 1989 to the summer of 1993, Schmidt played for the Bischofswerdaer FV .
