Andreas von Knichen , also: Kniche ; (* April 7, 1560 in Aschersleben ; † June 7, 1621 in Zerbst ) was a German jurist and politician.

Life

Andreas Knichen can be identified for the first time when he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg on October 4, 1573. On October 9, 1578, he moved to the University of Marburg and in 1584 he moved to the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in law. He then went to the University of Heidelberg, where he was professor at the institutes from 1586 to 1589.

In 1592 he became Chancellor of Duke Johann Ernst of Saxony-Eisenach and acquired the Freckleben estate in Anhalt during his tenure. In 1604 he was counsel for Duke Friedrich von Braunschweig and Elector Johann Sigismund von Brandenburg for ten years . He supported them in disputes with the city of Braunschweig and helped in negotiations to clarify the inheritance in Cleve. In 1614 he became Princely Anhalt Privy Councilor and Chancellor in Zerbst, where he worked until the end of his life.

From Emperor Rudolf II he received the nobility title of Count Palatinate and he mainly wrote constitutional writings. Knichen appeared as an opponent of the territorial sovereignty of the free and imperial cities, which brought him into conflict with the cities. In 1600 he married Katharina, the daughter of Petrus Wesenbeck . From this marriage, the son Gottfried von Knichen († 1682) is known as the author of the Opus politicum (Frankfurt / M. 1682).
