Andrei Jurjewitsch Kurkow ( Russian Андрей Юрьевич Курков , Ukrainian Андрій Юрійович Курков / Andrij Jurijowytsch Kurkow; born April 23, 1961 in Budogoschtsch , Leningrad Oblast ) is a Ukrainian writer .

Life

Kurkow, born in the Russian Union Republic of the USSR, has lived in Kiev since early childhood and graduated from the State Pedagogical Foreign Language Institute there in 1983. He belongs to the Russian-speaking population of the country and described himself in March 2014, while "Russia is trying to provoke a civil war in Ukraine", itself as Russians . Kurkow speaks eleven - according to his own, more recent information only seven - foreign languages and has worked in various professions, including editor, prison guard and cameraman. He has been a member of the London PEN Club since 1988, and has lived temporarily in London since 1996 . He penned around 18 documentary and feature film scripts; his novels have been translated into numerous languages, including German, French, Dutch, Spanish and Turkish.

His novels are characterized by a sharp, ironic view of life in post-Soviet society. Despite abstruse, extreme or surreal situations from everyday Ukrainian or Russian everyday life, Kurkow never loses the seriously and loving look at his characters.

In connection with the Euromaidan , Andrei Kurkow published for the first time excerpts from his diaries, which he has been keeping for thirty years. He took a clear position against Viktor Yanukovych , but also expressed criticism of Yulia Tymoshenko and Viktor Yushchenko . He protested against the occupation of Ukraine by Putin's army, also because he “can speak out against corruption, because I want the country in which I live to be a constitutional state”. In Germany, Kurkow is often regarded as the “Ukraine explainer”, also because of the most recent book, who illuminates the relationship to Europe and Russia under Vladimir Putin . The crisis in Ukraine is actually a Russian crisis: Putin fears the desire for freedom that could spill over to Russia.

In December 2016 Kurkow was one of the signatories of the appeal of the Berlin International Literature Festival "End the mass murder in Aleppo!", Which is directed against the "bombing war by Russian President Putin in the Syrian city of Aleppo ".
