arrest

According to Amnesty International , Sannikau was arrested on the evening of 19 December 2010 when he was taking part in a demonstration in Minsk against Lukashenko's election victory, which resulted in violence. When he was arrested, he is said to have been seriously injured in both legs by security forces.

According to the same source, his lawyer was able to see Andrej Sannikau in prison the following day. According to his statement, the condition of Sannikau was "terrifying". Sannikau shows signs of a brain injury and fresh injuries that eyewitnesses said he had not yet had when he was arrested. This suggests that Sannikau was ill-treated or tortured while in police custody . Amnesty International then carried out an urgent action to protect the Belarusian opposition politician from further abuse through public attention.

In May 2011, Sannikau was sentenced to five years in prison for “organizing mass unrest”. He was released from custody in mid-April 2012.
