Iryna Chalip

Iryna Chalip ( Belarusian Ірына Халіп , Russian Ирина Владимировна Халип ; born November 12, 1967 in Minsk ) is an opposition Belarusian journalist . She is the wife of the arrested Belarusian presidential candidate from 2010 Andrei Sannikau .

Life

Chalip studied journalism and began her journalistic career in Soviet times. In the mid-1990s she worked for the Sovetskaya Belarus. She was the deputy editor-in-chief of the Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta newspaper , which was discontinued in 2006. Since 2000 she has been reporting as a correspondent from Minsk for the Novaya Gazeta newspaper . She exposed cases of corruption and election fraud. She has been arrested several times, and two criminal proceedings have been brought against her for insulting the Belarusian President Aljaksandr Lukashenka . Chalip was arrested again on the evening of December 19, 2010, along with her husband, after a demonstration against fraud in the 2010 presidential elections in Belarus . She was released in late January 2011 and placed under house arrest. In May 2011, Chalip was sentenced to two years in prison. However, this judgment was overturned on July 19, 2013 by a Minsk court.

Iryna Chalip is mother of one son.

Awards

Iryna Chalip has received several international awards for her work, including the Henri Nannen Prize 2005 "for her courageous fight for press freedom in Belarus". In 2009 she received the Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation. In 2012 she received the Hermann Kesten Prize . Her name is a beacon of resistance in Belarus, according to the explanation.
