features

Mating on dandelions

female

The females reach a body length of 10–12 mm and are therefore somewhat smaller than honey bees. The head is black with short, light hair and a light fovea. Your thorax has short fox-red hairs on the upper side and white hairs on the underside. The abdomen is black and looks relatively matt due to its fine structure. He is mostly bald, he has sparse light hair on the sides and a distinctive reddish-yellow head of hair on the top. The front pairs of legs are dark with light hair. The rear rail and foot are orange, the scopae are light yellow to white, the flocculus is white.

male

The males are a little smaller than the females at 8–11 mm. They have light brown hair all over their body. The hair color is deepest on the top of the thorax. Their basic color is dark. The feet and rear rails are light colored, often with some dark spots. The abdomen is generally sparsely hairy, but also has a crest at the top.

Occurrence

The species occurs all over Europe. It lives in a wide variety of habitats, such as meadows, dry grass , on the edges of forests, in sandy heaths , but also in parks and gardens. It is undemanding to its nesting place and builds nests in open places or between herbs and grasses. There is another occurrence in East Asia. The somewhat smaller subspecies Andrena haemorrhoa japonibia lives here .

Way of life

The red-headed sand bee builds its nests solitary, whereby these are usually created individually or in small groups. Nectar and pollen are collected from a variety of different sources ( polylecty ). There is one generation per year from late March to June. The males fly around trees, bushes and flowers in search of females in April and May.

The red-headed sand bee is one of the species that does the pollination of the yellow lady's slipper.
