Andrew Streitwieser

Andrew Streitwieser (born June 23, 1927 in Buffalo (New York) ) is an American chemist (physical organic chemistry , quantum chemistry).

Streitwieser studied at Columbia University with a bachelor's degree in 1948 (at Columbia College), a master's degree in 1950 and his doctorate in 1952 with William von Eggers Doering . As a post-doctoral student , he was with John D. Roberts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . From 1952 he was an instructor and later a professor at the University of California, Berkeley . 1964/65 he was there Miller Institute Research Professor. In 1993 he retired.

He was one of the pioneers of molecular orbital theory and wrote a textbook about it as well as a well-known textbook on organic chemistry.

He received the Roger Adams Award in 2009, the James Flack Norris Award in 1982 , the American Chemical Society (California Section) Award in 1964, the American Chemical Society Award in Petroleum Chemistry in 1967 and the Berkeley Citation in 1993. In 2009 he became a Fellow of the American Chemical Society.

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1969), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1978) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1977). He is also a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1993). 1958 to 1962 he was a Sloan Research Fellow , 1969 Guggenheim Fellow and 1989 Arthur C. Cope Scholar. In 1976 he received the Humboldt Research Award , with which he was at the Technical University of Munich. In 1967 he received the George A. Olah Award in Hydrocarbon or Petroleum Chemistry .

From 1989 to 1997 he was Associate Editor of the Journal of Organic Chemistry .
