from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William von Eggers Doering (born June 22, 1917 in Fort Worth , Texas , † January 3, 2011 in Waltham , Massachusetts ) was an American chemist . He was Professor of Organic Chemistry at Harvard University and Dean of the Chemistry Faculty.

Life

Von Eggers Doering studied at Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1938. In 1943 he received his doctorate in organic chemistry under Sir Reginald Patrick Linstead . He was then an instructor and later an associate professor at Columbia University . In 1941/42 he worked for military research at Harvard and from 1943 at Polaroid . From 1947 to 1959 he was research director at the Hickrill Chemical Research Foundation. From 1952 he was a professor at Yale University and from 1967 back to Harvard, where he was Mallinckrodt professor from 1968 . In 1986 he retired and was an honorary professor at Fudan University in Shanghai .

Between 1939 and 2006, von Eggers-Doering published important work on quinine (formal total synthesis with Robert B. Woodward ), carbenes ( dichlorocarbene ), non-benzoid aromatics , tropylium ions and Cope rearrangements . The laudation for the Welch Prize recognized his decisive contributions to fundamental aspects of physical organic chemistry and his pioneering work on carbenes. He used carbenes in the production of cyclopropanes and in the CH insertion. The name Carbene also comes from Robert B. Woodward and Saul Winstein and was created on a night taxi ride in Chicago in 1951. The Parikh-Doering oxidation is named after him. His nickname "Bull" can be found as part of the name Bullvalen .

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1954).
