Andries Mac Leod

Andries Hugo Donald Mac Leod (born August 10, 1891 in Ledeberg , † March 28, 1977 ) was a Belgian-Swedish mathematician and philosopher .

Life

Mac Leod was the son of the botany professor in Ghent Julius Mac Leod (1857-1919), who had Scottish ancestors, and the translator Florence Mac Leod, who translated among other things Pyotr Alexejewitsch Kropotkin .

He attended the Athenaeum in Ghent and founded a philosophical circle there, including Marcel Minnaert , with whom he was lifelong friends.

After graduating from high school, he studied mathematics and physics at the University of Ghent with a doctorate in hydrodynamics in 1914 . He was surprised by the outbreak of the First World War on a trip to Sweden, where he stayed over the war, worked in the library of Gösta Mittag-Leffler and heard philosophy lectures by Adolph Phalén (1884–1931) in Uppsala.

In 1921 he went back to Belgium, where he was a teacher of physics and mathematics in Diest and Gent. At the same time he published his first book on non-Euclidean geometry in 1922 and his first philosophical work in 1927. In 1939 he moved to Sweden with his Swedish wife.

Honors

• In 1960 he received an honorary doctorate in Uppsala.
