Tower of the Winds

Andronikos of Kyrrhos ( ancient Greek Ἀνδρόνικος Κυρρήστου , also Andronicus of Cyrrhus or Andronicus Cyrrhestes ), son of Hermias, was a Macedonian astronomer and architect from Kyrrhos , whose main creative period the 3rd quarter of the 2nd century BC. Was.

Andronikos built an octagonal horologion in Athens from several sundials and water clocks called the Tower of the Winds , some of which still exists today. The building was popularly known as the Kyrrhestes House . The outer walls of the tower are decorated with figurative reliefs of the eight main Greek winds. Originally there was a bronze statue of the sea god Triton on the gable, the staff of which indicated the direction of the wind. It is unclear whether Andronikos was responsible for the overall design of the tower or only designed the technical equipment. Inscriptions from Athens are also known of a building erected or rebuilt at the city's expense, which is known as the "House of the Man from Kyrrhos". It is believed that this is not the Tower of the Winds, but presumably an observation station elsewhere in town. On the island of Tenos , Andronikos built a marble sundial for the temple of Poseidon and Amphitrite . The epigram on the sundial shows the origin of Andronikos from Macedonia; before the inscription was found, Kyrrhos in Syria was assumed to be his origin .
