Andrzej Artur Zamoyski (born April 2, 1800 in Vienna , † October 29, 1874 in Krakow ) was a Polish magnate and politician during the period of partition .

Life

He came from the Zamoyski family of magnates and was educated in Paris , Geneva and Edinburgh . In 1823 he became director of the Department of Agriculture and Trade of the Government of Congress Poland . During the November uprising of 1830/31 he was sent to Vienna by the government of the rebels to solicit support there.

After the defeat of the insurgents, he withdrew to his estates and introduced a number of innovations on his lands. He also published a magazine on economic issues and campaigned for the introduction of steam navigation on the Vistula . At the port of Czerniaków in Warsaw, he himself founded a shipyard to build river boats.

In 1858 he was the founder of the Agricultural Society and was its president in the following years. This organization developed under his leadership to represent the more moderate aristocratic-conservative political forces in Congress Poland. It had more than 4,000 members in 77 districts. At times she was the most influential mouthpiece of the Polish political public as a whole. The organization was almost something of a replacement for the state parliament.

Aleksander Wielopolski appeared in competition with him as the moderator's spokesman . While this increasingly passed into the Russian camp, Zamoyski remained in the opposition camp and rose to a leader of the moderate so-called "whites" during the time of the great national demonstrations at the beginning of the 1860s. He now fought the politics of Wielopolski. He had to come to St. Petersburg and after a fruitless conversation with the Tsar he had to go into exile in France. With that the whites in Poland lost their leader and the influence of the “reds” increased, which led to the outbreak of the failed January uprising of 1863/64.

family

Zamoyski was born on September 16, 1824 with Countess Rosa Zamoyska. Countess Potocka (born June 16, 1802 - † October 27, 1862 in Warsaw ) married.
